DIY Leather Wet Mold for the Corter Bag

Sizes:

  • Small - 5.75" x 7.5"
  • Large - 7.5" x 10"

This is a double-depth wet mold used to make a traditional cross body saddle bag. We use 1" thick marine grade plywood. It is unlacquered and does not need to be lacquered due to the properties of the wood and glue type. We have used many molds hundreds of time for years with no issues!

We recommend using 6oz-8oz veg tan leather. If you wish to use lighter weight leather you can simply add felt or other material to the back of the leather to help compress the leather fully around the mold as you want a snug fit.

How-To Steps for Wet Molding Leather:

  1. Cut leather piece about 1.5" to 2" inches wider than the tray size. So if making a 8" tray, cut a roughly 9.5" leather circle.
  2. Soak leather in warm water. About 5-10 minutes or until completely soaked.
    • Natural unfinished leathers soak quickly. Bridles and finished leathers may take longer to fully soak.
  3. Place leather over the inner mold, and then place the outer mold on top of the leather. Push outer mold down with hands or clicker press to compress the leather around the inner mold.
  4. Place clamps on edges of outer mold and wood base.
  5. Let sit for 24 hours until dry.
